Republicans pump $29 million into effort to protect 2022 gains in New York – Washington Examiner

Republicans have reserved $28.7 million in ads across New York, where the GOP hopes to hold seats it flipped in 2022 and protect its slim majority in the House of Representatives.

The announcement from the Republican-aligned Congressional Leadership Fund comes ahead of the fall elections and a month after Democrat-aligned House Majority PAC announced $21 million in TV ad reservations for the Empire State.

“The map is undoubtedly small, and we are in a dogfight,” Congressional Leadership Fund President Dan Conston said in a statement. “Yet we are in a stronger position than the mainstream narrative suggests, with a promising political environment and standout Members and candidates in the toughest races. Effective campaigns and resources will really matter.”

The reservation includes cable ad buys in New York’s competitive 17th and 18th congressional districts.

The 18th District could be home to New York’s most competitive race, as veteran New York Police Department commander Alison Esposito fights to upset Rep. Pat Ryan (D-NY). Esposito ran for lieutenant governor in 2022 on the ticket with then-Rep. Lee Zeldin. Although the gubernatorial race proved to be a close loss, Esposito won the 18th District by 3 percentage points.

The reservations direct $3.2 million toward New York’s 22nd Congressional District where new state redistricting plans have made it harder for Rep. Brandon Williams (R-NY) to hold on to his seat. A prolific fundraiser, Williams has outraised all his Democratic challengers.

President Joe Biden won the 17th District by 10 points in 2020. Now, Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) is facing a challenge from former Rep. Mondaire Jones. The Hudson Valley Republican announced his reelection campaign on Sunday, launching one of New York’s most closely watched races after his narrow victory in 2022.

Republicans hold a razor-thin, 217-213 majority in the House of Representatives.
