Republicans secure clean sweep of 2024 elections as they retain House majority – Washington Examiner

Republicans will maintain their slim majority in the House, surpassing the 218-member threshold and cementing GOP control in the House, Senate, and White House.

Democrat Kirsten Engel conceded to Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ) on Wednesday, pushing Republicans past the 218 votes needed to secure the House majority, according to projections from multiple networks. The Associated Press has not called which party will control the lower chamber as of 2:40 p.m. Eastern time.

Twelve races remain too close to call as of 2:30 p.m. Eastern time, according to the Associated Press, which will determine how much of a cushion the GOP will have heading into the next Congress.

If all the races are called as projected, the GOP could be looking at an even narrower majority than it operated with through most of the last Congress.

All 435 seats were up for grabs last week, but only 43 were considered competitive — and only 22 were rated as toss-ups that were actually set to determine which party would win the majority.

Of those 22, Republicans won seven seats, and Democrats won seven.

Some of the biggest victories for House Republicans include Michigan’s House seat held by outgoing Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), who ran for the U.S. Senate. Republican Tom Barrett defeated Democratic Curtis Hertel in the 7th Congressional District.

Republicans also defeated incumbent Rep. Susan Wild (D-PA), marking a major pickup in the Keystone State. Also in Pennsylvania, Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-PA) conceded to Republican Robert Bresnahan, in another major flip for the GOP.

Democrats scored a handful of victories, ousting Rep. Brandon Williams (R-NY) and Marc Molinaro (R-NY). Reps. Pat Ryan (D-NY), Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX), and Darren Soto (D-FL) also beat back competitive GOP challengers to secure another term in the House, managing to fend off a wider GOP majority.
