Republicans trash vulnerable Democrat Casey for switching stance on immigration – Washington Examiner

Republicans slammed Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) for changing up his immigration standpoints during election years after the congressman ripped the GOP earlier this month for not supporting the Senate immigration bill that included providing money and aid to Israel and Ukraine.

“Now that Bob Casey is in the race of his life, he’s hoping Pennsylvanians will forget he opposed building a border wall and even supported mass amnesty and taxpayer-funded health care for illegal immigrants,” Philip Letsou, a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, told Fox News. “Casey will say anything for power, even if that means lying to Pennsylvanians.”

The senator has a long history of voting in favor of stricter immigration policies when he is running for office and voting against them in off-years since being elected into office in 2006. In 2021 and 2022, when Casey was not running for reelection, he voted against drug detection at the border. While running for Senate this year, however, he has supported efforts through legislation to combat fentanyl trafficking at the border, according to the report.

Casey continued similar voting patterns when he was not up for reelection, voting against an amendment that would implement a border fence in 2008, 2009, and 2010 while voting for a bill that supported a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants in 2013. When Casey was running for office in 2006, he opposed federal benefits for illegal immigrants and supported establishing a fence at the border, the outlet reported.

“Bob Casey’s complicit in this crisis. He’s had 18 years in the Senate to take decisive action and help secure the border,” David McCormick, Casey’s GOP rival for the Senate seat, said.

“Instead, he’s spent his time enabling weak policies that have made Pennsylvanians less safe and hurt our economy. Our commonwealth deserves a leader who will make shutting down the border to illegal immigration his top priority,” McCormick said.

Despite his shifts on immigration, Casey’s communications director, Maddy McDaniel, told the outlet that the senator had a history of passing bipartisan bills that “strengthen border security” and slammed McCormick for not supporting the latest immigration bill.

“David McCormick refused to support a bipartisan bill that was called the ‘toughest border and immigration law in modern history,’ was supported by Border Patrol and would have cracked down on fentanyl trafficking — that’s why Pennsylvanians know McCormick can’t be trusted,” McDaniel said.

Casey is vulnerable this year as Pennsylvania is one of five states where President Joe Biden flipped and narrowly won in 2020.
