Republicans try to flip the script on Biden with Trump rematch looming

Republicans are attempting to turn President Joe Biden‘s attacks on former President Donald Trump back on him as everything from election denialism to charges of corruption come to define the 2024 election cycle.

A central tenet of Biden’s reelection bid has been lamenting the former president’s voter fraud claims and labeling him a danger to democracy. In kind, Trump has recently begun to label Biden as the true threat to democracy, calling the president the “destroyer of American democracy” just last month.

Biden has in part fueled that criticism. He raised a few eyebrows last week when he referred to former Democratic Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe as the “real governor” despite his loss to Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) in 2021.

The White House later explained that Biden was joking, noting that McAuliffe was previously governor of the commonwealth from 2014 to 2018 and that Biden had congratulated Youngkin on the win “out of the gate.”

But Republicans have leaned into these and other statements to undercut the centerpiece of Biden’s reelection campaign. During the same speech in which Biden called McAuliffe the real governor, he said it’s time to “defend democracy” and that “democracy is on the ballot, freedom is on the ballot” this fall.

Republicans were quick to point out the apparent hypocrisy. A long-standing pinged post from the RNC’s X account features what the group says are 24 straight minutes of Democrats denying election results.

Democrats counter that nothing their party has done has come anywhere close to the level of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, but it’s not the only issue on which the GOP has worked to flip the script on Biden as election season approaches.

The president made much of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago mansion being raided in an FBI search for classified documents in the summer of 2022. Biden later wondered aloud “how anyone could be that irresponsible,” only to find himself embroiled in his own classified documents scandal a few months later.

Republicans wasted no time seizing on the controversy.

Then there are the competing claims of corruption. Trump was impeached twice, first for a phone call in which he tried to get the Ukrainian government to investigate Biden, who was running for president at the time.

Republicans countered during the ensuing trial that Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, was engaged in shady business deals in Ukraine, and they’ve since opened their own impeachment inquiry into the younger Biden and the extent to which his father was involved in those foreign affairs.

Democrats have tried to flip the script at times, too. One of Trump’s signature personality quirks is his creation of nicknames and putdowns of his opponents, from “sleepy” Joe Biden to “birdbrain” Nikki Haley.

Biden is now working to get under his likely November opponent’s skin, calling him a loser during a speech last week in South Carolina.

The president followed that up during a Tuesday speech in Florida with a nickname of his own.

“Trump is also the one president who said he doesn’t want to be like Herbert Hoover. That’s what he said. … He’s already Herbert Hoover,” Biden told attendees at a West Palm Beach fundraiser. “He’s the only president other than Herbert Hoover who lost jobs … fewer jobs when he left office than when he came to office. Yes, Donald ‘Herbert Hoover’ Trump.”

Trump leads Biden in several battleground states, including in states he carried against the former president in 2020. The back-and-forth between the two, along with Haley, who is working to get under The Donald’s skin as well, will likely continue and escalate as November draws nearer.

“[Biden is] not doing it just for the sake of making Donald Trump mad or for the satisfaction of punching him in the nose,” Kate Bedingfield, his former deputy campaign manager, recently told CNN. “He’s doing it because it takes the conversation about the campaign to a place that’s good for him.”
