Police have increased the reward for information leading to the arrest of Christopher Haynes, who is on the run after escaping George Washington University Hospital last week after being apprehended in connection with a murder.
The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department is offering $30,000 as the search for Haynes enters its second week. The department says it has received numerous reports of possible sightings of Haynes, including security footage from a residential backyard near the hospital.

Haynes, 30, was sought by law enforcement in connection with the murder of Brent Hayward that occurred on August 12 at approximately 10:45 a.m. in the 1500 block of Kenilworth Avenue near the Maryland border.
He was apprehended in Manassas, Virginia, on Sept. 6 and subsequently “waived his right to an extradition hearing” before being booked and processed, police said. Several hours later, Haynes complained of ankle pain and was brought to the D.C. hospital to be treated.
According to the department, while an officer was changing Haynes’s handcuffs, the suspect attacked him and escaped with the handcuffs still attached to one of his wrists. Two officers chased after him to no avail.
Haynes is described as a black man standing 6 feet tall, weighing approximately 205 pounds, with black shoulder-length dreadlocks, brown eyes, and a Washington Nationals tattoo on his neck. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, gray shorts, and white socks with black handcuffs hanging from his right wrist.
A national spotlight was cast on Danelo Cavalcante, a convicted murderer who escaped from a Pennsylvania prison and evaded capture for two weeks before finally being caught on Wednesday. Less attention has been paid to the case of Haynes.
But the department raising its reward regarding the capture of the fugitive underscores its prioritization of the case and perhaps its frustration with the lack of tangible results.
Federal and local agencies are helping search for Haynes, per CNN, including the U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Park Police. And the police department’s Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating how Haynes was able to flee custody, according to acting Chief of Police Pamela Smith.
