In a high-impact binational operation, the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) — in coordination with Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR), with support from Interpol and the DEA — arrested Roberto “Beto” Bazán Salinas on March 5, 2026, in the municipality of Salamanca, Guanajuato.

This individual, identified as a high-ranking operator of the Gulf Cartel (CDG), was listed among the priority targets of U.S. agencies and had an international arrest warrant issued by ICE on January 21, 2026, accompanied by his photograph on the most-wanted list.

According to official statements from ICE and HSI, Bazán Salinas is accused of his alleged involvement in smuggling multimillion-dollar shipments of cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana from the Matamoros region in Tamaulipas into the United States.

HSI offices in Monterrey, Matamoros, and Beaumont led the investigation that located him far from the Gulf Cartel’s traditional area of influence in northeastern Mexico, demonstrating this criminal organization’s capacity for geographic expansion.

The CDG has been designated by U.S. authorities as a foreign terrorist organization in the context of narcoterrorism activities and control of cross-border routes.

The arrest delivers a concrete blow to the networks poisoning American communities with fentanyl and other lethal drugs, while dismantling structures that generate violence and corruption in Mexican territory.

Sources such as HSI itself highlight that Bazán Salinas was a key figure in drug trafficking logistics, and his capture is part of an ongoing investigation against the cartel. U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson publicly commended the FGR’s work, stating that “actions like this demonstrate the strength of our cooperation when we share information and work together to dismantle criminal networks.”

This case underscores the need to maintain close, uncompromising collaboration between both countries. Cartels respect neither borders nor ideologies; they operate with impunity when authorities ease pressure.

The Gulf Cartel’s presence in Guanajuato — a state historically far from its original stronghold — confirms that these organizations move freely at any sign of weakness.

The capture of “Beto” Bazán Salinas is not an isolated event but the result of shared intelligence and determination to protect the national security of Mexico and the United States.

This arrest sends a clear message: high-ranking operators facilitating the flow of poison northward no longer have anywhere to hide. Binational cooperation, when carried out firmly, yields tangible results against the narcoterrorism threatening regional stability.
