Romney hits Trump for dictator comments: ‘Human gumball machine’

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) hit former President Donald Trump Sunday for his comments regarding whether he would use his power for political retribution if reelected. The Senator called the president a “human gumball machine.”

Trump recently responded to a question from Fox News’s Sean Hannity asking if he would use power for political retribution if he were to be reelected. Trump said he would not, except for “day one.” Romney spoke about the comment Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press, calling Trump a “human gumball machine.”

“When I was a kid, there were something called a gumball machine. You could put a penny in and a gumball would come out,” Romney started. “It was automatic – there was no filter.”

“Donald Trump is kind of a human gumball machine,” Romney said. He continued the analogy, explaining that, “A thought or a notion comes in, and it comes out of his mouth. There’s not a lot of filter that goes on… He just says whatever.”

“I don’t attach an enormous amount of impact to the particular words that come out and try and evaluate each one of them, I do think you can look at his record as president and particularly in the last months of his presidency and say this is a dangerous approach.”

Romney said the last months of Trump’s presidency were concerning.

Romney’s criticism came after recent reporting by Axios that said Trump would employ a band of loyalists if reelected. The report noted that the administration would seek to employ people who are loyal and willing to bend the rules of the government.

Government officials and journalists critical of Trump would reportedly be targets of the hypothetical administration. The report also said the military could be used to crack down on protesters in the United States.

According to various polls, Trump led the GOP primary field Sunday by a large margin.

FiveThirtyEight had the former president garnering just under 60%, compared to Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who had 12.6% support, and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, who had 11.6% support.
