Romney slams Trump for not wanting border solution so he can blame Biden: ‘Really appalling’

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) called the situation at the southern border an “important issue” for former President Donald Trump‘s reelection campaign and criticized him for reportedly discouraging a GOP border resolution before the 2024 election.

“The fact that he would communicate to Republican senators and congresspeople that he doesn’t want us to solve the border problem because he wants to blame Biden for it is really appalling,” Romney told reporters on Thursday.

“But the reality is that, that we have a crisis at the border. The American people are suffering as a result of what’s happening at the border,” Romney continued. “And someone running for president ought to try to get the problem solved as opposed to saying, ‘Hey, save that problem. Don’t solve it. Let me take credit for solving it later.’”

Romney’s comments come after weeks of negotiations for a border deal in the Senate, as senators try to find a way to agree on border security and funding for Ukraine and Israel in the same bill. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has warned Republicans they are unlikely to get a similar deal for the border if Trump is elected president, so they should act now.

Trump has reportedly engaged Republicans in private conversations and in public statements on social media, urging them to vote against a border deal, sources told CNN.

Sen. Todd Young (R-IN) expressed concern over reports that the border deal would be scrapped for political reasons.

“I hope no one is trying to take this away for campaign purposes,” Young said.
