Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) criticized news outlets that opted not to air former President Donald Trump’s victory speech in Iowa, describing it as “state-run media” being used “by authoritarian governments.”

In the wake of Trump’s victory in the Iowa caucuses on Monday, MSNBC chose not to air his victory speech live, while CNN aired parts of it before cutting away from Trump’s “anti-immigrant rhetoric,” according to CNN anchor Jake Tapper. Rubio argued that outlets have always been biased against Trump, as people are “partisan,” but that the decision not to air his speech involved watching it and releasing “the snippets we want you to hear.”

“This is exactly how state-run media is used by authoritarian governments to delegitimize, to discredit, to basically make people believe that there is no alternative but to the regime and to their rule,” Rubio said on Fox News’s Hannity. “And that’s how it’s destroying the media in this country. It’s why, at this point, you know, no one believes anything they see or hear anymore.”

Rubio was also critical of the way outlets covered the Iowa results, with several outlets arguing Trump won in Iowa because a majority of the state’s population is made up of white Christians. The outlets also argued that the voters who voted for Trump are “dumb, stupid, uneducated people that don’t know any better,” he said.

The decision not to air Trump’s speech on MSNBC was explained by anchor Rachel Maddow, who claimed the decision was not an easy one to make. Maddow argued that part of the reason the network would not air the speech was because there was “a cost to us as a news organization of knowingly broadcasting untrue things.”

Beyond Rubio, one of the critics of MSNBC’s decision to forgo Trump’s victory speech was commentator Russell Brand, who joked that outlets were refusing to show the speech because people who see an unfiltered version of Trump speaking “kind of like him.” Brand played footage of Trump’s speech when he suggested that the country should come together, which Brand joked was a terrifying thought.

“He’s singing a John Lennon lyric!” Brand said. “Come together! If he says, ‘Right now, under me,’ I’m out, baby! I’m out!”

Trump has also criticized CNN and MSNBC for not airing his entire speech, arguing on Tuesday that the two outlets should have their “licenses or whatever they have” taken away.

The statement Trump gave on the two outlets was made in New Hampshire, where the next state caucuses will be held for the Republican Party on Jan. 23.
