Samantha-Jo Roth says ‘perception is reality’ when it comes to economic confidence

The Washington Examiner’s Samantha-Jo Roth claimed people are seeking immediate changes in their perception of the economy.

Roth appeared on Fox Business’s Cavuto: Coast to Coast Friday to discuss how the average voter perceives the economy. Her appearance came on the same day as the release of the latest jobs report, which reported 353,000 jobs in the month of January, but according to Roth, this report won’t convince voters all is well.

“I will say that those strong numbers are interesting today, but also, when you talk to voters, the perception really is reality,” Roth said. “But those prices at the grocery store, they are still such a headache for some of these voters. This is what voters are thinking about when they’re going to the polls. We’ve seen recently in some polling that voters do not view the economy recovering as much as maybe they should be.”

Roth said she had heard people while reporting on the campaign trail citing lower mortgages and grocery prices straight from the campaign ads of former President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden and his administration are attempting to hold up some economic reports as evidence that things are getting better.

“I think they’re trying to go about it with like incremental changes, and they’re trying to, you know, talk to people saying look, the economy is not going to get better overnight,” Roth said of the Biden administration. “We are doing a number of things to try and make it better, and you’re going to see some results in the days, months to come. Does that translate with voters? They want to see a change immediately.”

A poll released earlier this week found that roughly six in ten Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, and many of those asked have little to no money in their savings account.
