Sam’s Club to use AI to eliminate receipt checks at exit

Sam’s Club has announced that it will utilize artificial intelligence in its stores to help streamline the shopping experience at its stores.

Executives for the warehouse shopping chain owned by Walmart made the announcement at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show. During the presentation, Megan Crozier, Sam’s Club Chief Merchant, announced that the chain would soon do away with people who check receipts at the stores’s exits and will instead use AI to check customers’ carts upon exit.

The company said technology deployed in the exit area of the club will take photos of carts and verify all items have been paid for.

Crozier then showcased a demonstration of Sam’s Club “Scan & Go” technology at work, which showed two customers using their phone to scan and pay for items to skip the checkout line and going through an arch to skip the receipt-check line, saving both of them time.

“We’ll keep finding ways to give our members what they want most: great items, unmatched convenience, and time back for more important things in life,” Crozier said. “Sam’s Club is people-led and tech-powered, and this latest innovation is just one example.”

Sam’s Club is planning to roll out this AI technology for all of its stores by the end of the year, Crozier said.

In the wake of the firing of ex-Harvard President Claudine Gay, billionaire Bill Ackman has suggested using artificial intelligence to detect plagiarism across elite college institutions. Ackman argued that the “best approach” for checking for plagiarism among the leadership in elite colleges is “probably to launch an AI startup to do this job.”

A survey consisting of 2,700 AI researchers stated that AI becoming smarter than humans, also known as a “superintelligence,” would entail a 5% or greater chance of causing an extinction-level event. The survey also stated that, within the next decade, AI programs will have a 50% or greater chance of completing the vast majority of various tasks, including writing songs or installing wiring into a new home.
