Sarah Bedford says House Republicans hesitant to impeach Biden are ‘coming around’

Sarah Bedford said Tuesday that House Republicans who were initially hesitant about an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden are now “coming around” to the idea there is “enough smoke” to proceed with the inquiry.

Bedford, investigations editor at the Washington Examiner, said the change among some House Republicans occurred after other members have found “some evidence” indicating the president has not been “entirely truthful” about how he financially benefited from his family’s business dealings while serving as vice president to then-President Barack Obama. Her comment comes after House Republicans voted last week to file an impeachment inquiry resolution, eyeing an impeachment vote on Wednesday.

“There’s been some evidence that House Republicans have uncovered to suggest that Joe Biden has not been entirely truthful about the level of knowledge that he had of his family‘s business and the level of personal involvement he had in some of those deals and relationships with some of those foreign business partners,” Bedford said on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal. “And because of that, I think House Republicans who had been on the fence about an impeachment inquiry just a few months ago, some of them in vulnerable districts, are coming around to the idea that there is enough smoke to formalize this impeachment inquiry.”

The investigation into the Biden family involves the president’s son, Hunter Biden, whose attorney has refused to allow the younger Biden to attend a closed-door deposition, instead offering to let Hunter Biden testify in a public hearing. Bedford believes House Republicans are rejecting this offer because “they’d get better and more thorough testimony behind closed doors.”

Beyond looking into the president’s potential involvement in his family’s foreign business dealings, the impeachment inquiry is also looking into if the president used his influence to pressure the Department of Justice to help his son.

Michael Tyler, a Biden campaign communications director, slammed the Republican-led House impeachment inquiry as a “sham.” He also argued that the inquiry is “a nakedly transparent ploy by House MAGA Republicans” to help boost former President Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential run.

Ahead of Wednesday, the White House has pointed to past statements made by House Republicans, who said there was not enough evidence to impeach the president and are trying to tie them to the more hard-line members of the conference in pursuing the inquiry.
