Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) invited Pennsylvania Republican Senate candidate Dave McCormick to freshman Senate orientation after not extending an invitation due to uncounted ballots in the race.
The Associated Press called the race for McCormick last Thursday, but incumbent Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) has refused to concede the race. McCormick was spotted on Capitol Hill on Tuesday morning, arriving to attend freshman orientation.

In a video posted on social media on Tuesday, Casey said, “The American process was born in Pennsylvania, and that process will play out.”
Schumer’s olive branch to McCormick came paired with an invite to Sen.-elect Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) to attend orientation after the Associated Press called the race for the Arizona Democratic congressman late on Monday.
That final race call means the new Republican majority will be 53 seats compared to Schumer’s 47 seats.
“Ruben Gallego and David McCormick have been invited to attend orientation,” a spokesperson for Schumer told reporters Tuesday.
Schumer previously had not invited McCormick and Gallego to the meetings for all new members of the Senate, emphasizing over the weekend that around 100,000 ballots must still be counted in the Pennsylvania Senate race.
“As is custom, we will invite the winner once the votes are counted,” Schumer said in a statement on Sunday.
Schumer’s decision comes after he faced growing pressure to invite both McCormick and Gallego to the orientation. Republican senators who were opposed to Schumer’s decision to block McCormick had offered to escort McCormick to the Capitol.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) spoke out on social media, noting she attended her Senate orientation in 2018 even though her race at the time had not been called.
“In 2018 my race wasn’t called for 6 days. I jumped on a redeye to DC to make Senate orientation — I learned so much & made lasting relationships that week. Dave McCormick & Ruben Gallego will be senators for PA & AZ. They should be invited to orientation & start learning the job,” she posted.
