Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will lead a bipartisan delegation of lawmakers to Israel over the weekend to meet with its new unity government and discuss U.S. assistance, according to a spokesperson for the New York Democrat.

“Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the highest ranking Jewish elected official in United States history, will be leading a bipartisan CODEL to Israel this weekend to show the United States’s unwavering support for Israel,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

“There, Leader Schumer will meet with the new unity government, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Benny Gantz, as well as President Isaac Herzog. Sen. Schumer will discuss what resources the United States can provide to support Israel on all fronts.”

The senator’s office has not revealed the names of the other lawmakers accompanying him on the trip.

Schumer’s visit comes after Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited the region on Thursday, and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin plans to visit on Friday.

Earlier in the week, the New York Democrat cut his trip to China short due to the events unfolding in Israel. The Senate majority leader and a bipartisan group met with Chinese President Xi Jinping before returning to the U.S. on Thursday. Schumer led a delegation of six senators, three Democrats and three Republicans, to China for talks that sought to advance America’s economic and national security interests. This all comes ahead of a possible meeting between President Joe Biden and Xi next month. Sens. Mike Crapo (R-ID), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), John Kennedy (R-LA), Jon Ossoff (D-GA), and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) were also on the trip to Asia.

The weekend travel comes as Senate Democrats and the White House are urging Republicans to move rapidly to confirm nominees to vacant top national security positions across the Middle East, as the U.S. attempts to coordinate a response to Hamas’s attack on Israel.
