Sen. Tommy Tuberville endorses Tim Sheehy in Montana Senate race

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) endorsed Tim Sheehy on Friday in the Montana Senate race as national Republicans hope to elevate the former Navy SEAL ahead of what could become a messy primary.

This endorsement is Sheehy’s 10th from a sitting senator, including chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee Steve Daines (R-MT) and Senate Republican Conference Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY), showing how national Republicans are trying to coalesce around him.

“As a football coach for over 40 years, I know how to spot talent. Believe me when I say Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy is a five-star recruit,” Tuberville said in a statement first shared with the Washington Examiner. “Washington needs more America First outsiders with business experience, and that’s why I’m proud to endorse Tim Sheehy for U.S. Senate.”

The endorsement of Sheehy, CEO of Bridger Aerospace, comes as national Republicans are attempting to freeze out Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT), who is telling colleagues that he plans to launch his bid just before the March 11 filing deadline in Montana.

Daines and other Senate Republicans are trying to get as many people behind Sheehy as possible, as Rosendale’s candidacy could complicate things for the GOP in Montana. Incumbent Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) beat Rosendale in 2018, and national Republicans believe Sheehy has a stronger path to victory.
