Supplemental Security Income recipients will receive a rare second payment in the month of September in two weeks, and individual filers could see a maximum of $914, while couples could receive up to $1,371.
The second payment goes out on Friday, Sept. 29, and will replace October’s monthly payment because of a quirk in the Social Security Administration’s calendar. The first payment of the month was issued on Sept. 1.
Filers normally just see one payment each month, but in the rare cases where the installment would fall on a weekend, the recipients receive the payment on the last business day of the previous month.
Payment amounts depend on a filer’s income, living situation, assets, and other factors. For those who filed as individuals, the rate for payments is up to $914 per month. The rate for eligible couples is worth up to $1,371 per month. Essential persons, who live with someone receiving SSI and provide them with necessary care, get a monthly payment of $458.
In order to qualify for the federal program, which is separate from regular Social Security retirement checks, a person needs to be 65 or over, and he or she must meet specific financial requirements. People under the age of 65 may qualify if they are at least partially blind or have a physical or mental condition that seriously limits their daily activities for at least one year. They could also qualify if their condition is expected to result in death.
Children can also qualify for SSI payments if they are at least partially blind or have a physical or mental condition that seriously limits their activities for at least a year, and their parents or guardians meet certain financial conditions.

The Social Security Administration first issued the payments in January 1974, and payment rates have increased for cost of living adjustments since 1975, according to the agency.
Two SSI checks will be sent during the months of March, June, September, and December in 2023, while the rest only see one check on the first of each month.
