Speaker vote: Who are the Republicans who said they would cost Jim Jordan the gavel

The House is expected to vote for a new speaker on the floor around noon on Tuesday, with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) seeking to snag the title.

However, despite various holdouts flipping for the Ohio Republican on Monday, there are a few Republicans who remain in opposition, putting his election in jeopardy. Initially, just 152 members of the Republican conference committed to voting for Jordan on the floor during a closed-door vote — far from the 217 he needs. He was nominated in the conference by a vote of 124-81 against Rep. Austin Scott (R-GA).

Several Republicans are still holding out against Jordan’s bid. The House Judiciary Committee chairman can only afford to lose four conference members due to House Republicans’ slim majority.

Those who stand in opposition include Reps. Don Bacon (R-NE), Mike Lawler (R-NY), Mike Kelly (R-PA), Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Victoria Spartz (R-IN), Freedom Caucus member Ken Buck (R-CO), and John Rutherford (R-FL).

Jordan’s bid to win the speaker’s gavel made progress on Monday as several centrist Republicans and establishment allies who had projected significant doubt flipped to declare their support for him.

Reps. Mike Rogers (R-AL), Ken Calvert (R-CA), Ann Wagner (R-MO), and Vern Buchanan (R-FL) were some of the most outspoken opponents of Jordan’s bid for the speakership. However, each of the members announced his or her support for him on Monday, paving a promising path for Jordan to reach the speaker’s gavel.

“Jim Jordan and I spoke at length again this morning, and he has allayed my concerns about keeping the government open with conservative funding, the need for strong border security, our need for consistent international support in times of war and unrest, as well as the need for stronger protections against the scourge of human trafficking and child exploitation,” Wagner said in a statement.

“Jim Jordan is our conference nominee, and I will support his nomination for speaker on the House floor,” she added.

While Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA) hasn’t publicly said she isn’t voting for Jordan but has reportedly indicated such in private.

Reasons for their disapproval of Jordan range from loyalties to former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) or Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), who was the most recent Republican nominee for speaker but dropped out before it went to the floor for a vote. Various personal gripes also define Republican opposition to Jordan, who has been a loyal ally to former President Donald Trump.
