State of the Union 2024: George Santos gets icy welcome after surprise appearance at Capitol – Washington Examiner

Former New York Rep. George Santos made a return to Capitol Hill for President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, and he made sure no one missed his attendance.

Clad in a Swavorski crystal suit jacket and a bedazzled collar, Santos returned to the House chamber on Thursday evening for the first time since being ousted by his colleagues just three months earlier. His visit surprised several members on both sides of the aisle, garnering mixed reactions from those who backed the historic measure to remove him from office.

“Is he lost?” one House Republican told the Washington Examiner.

“We won’t make a scene,” said Rep. Marc Molinaro (R-NY), who voted in favor of ousting his fellow New York Republican. But, he added, “the reception is going to be as cold as the air conditioning.”

“Expelled Congressman George Santos is disgracing the House Floor with his presence,” posted Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY). “He should be expelled from the House Floor.”

Santos’s appearance comes three months after the House voted to expel him, marking only the sixth time a lawmaker has been ousted from the lower chamber in U.S. history. The historic move came after a scathing Ethics Committee report found “substantial evidence” that Santos had knowingly filed false or incomplete reports to the Federal Election Commission, used campaign funds for personal purposes, and “engaged in knowing and willful violations” in relation to the Ethics in Government Act.

Santos was later replaced by Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY), who was sworn in just last week.

When asked about Santos’s surprise reemergence, Suozzi just smiled and told reporters: “No comment.”

Under House rules, former members are permitted access to the floor — a privilege that was not stripped from Santos when he was removed. Santos was seen on the House floor speaking to several Republican lawmakers before Biden’s speech began, with some conservatives appearing pleased with his presence.

“I always liked George,” said Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN).

“I still pray for him every day,” said Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN), who added he still talks “occasionally” to Santos.
