State of the Union 2024: Trump slams Biden over border and inflation in prebuttal video – Washington Examiner

Former President Donald Trump excoriated President Joe Biden‘s handling of the growing migrant crisis at the southern border and worsening inflation ahead of Biden’s third State of the Union address on Thursday night.

“Joe Biden is on the run from his record and lying like crazy to try to escape accountability for the horrific devastation he and his party have created — all the while they continue the very policies that are causing this horror show to go,” Trump said in a prebuttal video released Thursday afternoon.

The former president then touted his efforts to handle immigration during his four years in the White House.

“When I left office, we gave Joe Biden the most secure border in U.S. history — we gave him ‘Remain in Mexico’ — very tough to get, but I got it, Safe Third Agreements, the asylum ban, Title 42, 571 miles of border wall, rapid deportations, and much more,” Trump continued. “We had the safest border in the history of our country.”

Biden will likely touch on immigration during his address after he and Trump had dueling visits to the southern border last week. Immigration has emerged as a top issue for voters and was the top concern for primary voters in three of the first four early-voting states, beating out the economy, abortion, and foreign policy.

Trump slammed Biden for the uptick in immigrants who enter the U.S. illegally during his prebuttal.

“By the time his term is up, we could have close to 20 million people in our country. We have no idea from where they come, we have no idea who they are,” Trump said. “They have no identification. Many come from mental institutions, many come from prisons, they’re terrorists. We have a calamity the likes of which we’ve never seen before.”

The former president went on to heap blame on Biden for the inflation levels that people have continued to struggle with in recent years.

“Likewise, the sight of a feeble Joe Biden talking about ‘shrinkflation’ — the term he uses — is one of the most ridiculous things this country has ever seen,” Trump said. “Shrinkflation is just another way of saying inflation — it means that you’re losing a lot of money because these people don’t know what they’re doing.”

The term “shrinkflation” is a portmanteau of “shrink” and “inflation” that Democrats are using to slam corporate greed. Biden has seen his approval ratings decrease due to rising grocery costs and gas prices. But by pushing anger toward corporations, the president and his fellow Democrats are hoping to preempt electoral losses in November.

Biden is sure to comment on the economy when he speaks Thursday night as he hopes to convince the public to give him another four years in office.

Trump, however, isn’t convinced by Democratic arguments that corporations are cheating consumers by charging the same prices for fewer products.

“Under my leadership, there was no inflation. We had the greatest economy in the history of the world,” he concluded. “It’s time to tell crooked Joe Biden, ‘You’re fired.’”
