Republican Utah state Rep. Trevor Lee delivered the perfect response to a Scripture-based scolding.
Patricia Mead, a disgruntled Utah citizen and a registered Republican, says she sent Lee an email after reading about bill HB88. Lee is the chief sponsor of the bill, which “addresses lawful presence for receipt of public benefits,” that is, restricts illegal migrants from receiving certain public services. “I sent him an email, only one sentence, quoting Luke 6:31 from the Bible: ‘Do to others as you would have them do to you,’” Mead writes in a letter to The Salt Lake Tribune. Lee has received pushback on bill HB88 from other Utah House Republicans. GOP leadership rebuked Lee, then a candidate for the Utah House, in 2022 for operating a covert social media account that critiqued Pride Month, homosexuality, and transgenderism, among other items.

Mead claims she was “quite taken aback to receive his angry, threatening reply.”
That reply, according to Mead, read: “What’s your address? I’ll start sending everyone to your house. And if you say no, you’re not Christlike.” Mead’s reply tacitly acknowledges that being in close quarters with untold numbers of unvetted migrants is, indeed, a threat. Mead seems quite content with coerced generosity, in the form of taxes funneled towards illegal migrants, but balks at the thought of personal generosity. Besides, I’m quite sure Lee is following the golden rule in proposing bill HB88. Lee, so far as I’m aware, has never trespassed into a foreign country and taken advantage of public services. It’s fair game for him to mandate others follow his lead.
