Stephen King joins growing number of people asking Biden not to seek reelection – Washington Examiner

Author Stephen King became the latest celebrity on social media to call for President Joe Biden not to continue his 2024 reelection campaign “in the interests” of the country.

King has made a name for himself over the years as a frequent critic of former President Donald Trump, who is running for president again this year. His criticism of Biden, however, follows similar moves that other celebrities and even some Democratic lawmakers have made, which come after the president’s underperformance at the first presidential debate last month.

“Joe Biden has been a fine president, but it’s time for him — in the interests of the America he so clearly loves — to announce he will not run for re-election,” King wrote on X.

King’s post received the attention of X owner Elon Musk, who joked that “even Stephen King is voting for Trump.” Musk has increased his criticism of Biden and his administration over the last couple years but has clarified that he will not donate to either Biden or Trump.

Biden conducted a telephone interview on Monday on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, during which he told Democrats concerned about his electability to “challenge me at the convention” next month. He has also released a letter clarifying he has no intention of dropping out of the race.

The president’s appearance impressed The Princess Bride director Rob Reiner, who argued that Biden continuing to act the same way he did on his Morning Joe appearance would “shut up people like me who think he should step aside.” Only a day prior, Reiner said it was “time to stop f***ing around” and have Biden step down.

If we see the Joe Biden that appeared on Morning Joe today every day until Nov.5, he’ll be able to shut up people like me who think he should step aside.

Abigail Disney, the daughter of Disney co-founder Roy Disney, has said she will withdraw her financial support for the Democratic Party until Biden is replaced with a different candidate. She added the Democrats have “an excellent vice president” in Vice President Kamala Harris and that the party could win the 2024 election “by a lot” if she is the nominee.

Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson, one of several prominent Democrats asking Biden to step aside, has also denounced the Democratic National Committee for not encouraging a competitive primary process. She claimed “this sort of blew up in their face” and that there is a serious risk of voters staying home instead of voting for Biden come Nov. 5.
