Stimulus update: Deadline to claim Georgia rebate worth up to $500 is in nine days

Georgia taxpayers who received an extension on filing their income tax for 2022 have nine days to file their returns to see a tax rebate of up to $500.

Most residents in the Peach State filed their taxes at the regular deadline in April and subsequently received their tax rebate shortly after, but those in Georgia who were affected by severe storms earlier this year were allowed to file their taxes by Oct. 16, per the IRS. Those taxpayers who got the extension will see their rebates once they have filed their 2022 tax returns.

Taxpayers must have filed their income tax returns for 2021 and 2022, had a tax liability in 2021, and be a “Georgia resident, part-year resident, or nonresident,” to be eligible for the rebate.

“Georgia is once again in a position to issue surplus tax refunds thanks to years of responsible, conservative budgeting and because we chose to protect both lives and livelihoods during the pandemic,” Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) said in a statement about the tax rebate in May.

“While failed policies coming out of Washington, D.C., are pushing us closer to a recession and forcing hardworking Georgians to endure sky-high inflation, we on the state level are doing what we can to return money back where it belongs — in taxpayers’ hands,” he said.

Amounts for the payments being sent out to taxpayers are dependent on the Georgian’s filing status and tax liability. For single filers, the rebate is worth as much as $250, and for the heads of households, it is worth as much as $375. Joint filers, meanwhile, can receive a rebate of up to $500.
