While most taxpayers in the Peach State have already received their 2022 tax rebates from the state, some taxpayers in Georgia who received an extension on their income tax filing deadline will soon see rebates of up to $500.

Rebate amounts being sent out to residents are dependent on the taxpayer’s filing status and tax liability. For single filers, the rebate is worth as much as $250; for heads of households, it is worth as much as $375, while joint filers can receive a rebate of up to $500.

Those who filed their 2022 tax returns at the regular deadline in April and were eligible for the rebate have already received their payments, but those who received a lawful extension will see their rebates once they have filed their tax returns. Residents in parts of Georgia affected by severe storms earlier this year were authorized extensions to file their taxes by Oct. 16, according to the IRS.

Taxpayers must have filed their income tax returns for 2021 and 2022, had a tax liability in 2021, and be a “Georgia resident, part-year resident, or nonresident” to qualify for the rebate.

“Georgia is once again in a position to issue surplus tax refunds thanks to years of responsible, conservative budgeting and because we chose to protect both lives and livelihoods during the pandemic,” Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) said in a statement about the tax rebate in May.

“While failed policies coming out of Washington, D.C. are pushing us closer to a recession and forcing hardworking Georgians to endure sky-high inflation, we on the state level are doing what we can to return money back where it belongs — in taxpayers’ hands,” he added.
