Stimulus update: Deadline to file taxes for rebate of up to $400 in Virginia today

November 01, 2023 12:16 PM

Residents in the commonwealth of Virginia have through Wednesday to file their 2022 state income taxes to qualify for a tax rebate of up to $400.

To be eligible for the tax rebate, taxpayers must file their tax returns in the state by the Nov. 1 extended deadline. Today’s deadline is six months after the regular May 1, 2023, deadline to file 2022 Virginia state income taxes. If a Virginia resident filed his or her income taxes at the regular deadline, no further steps are necessary to receive the tax rebate.

The tax rebates being sent out in the Old Dominion are worth up to $200 for individual filers and up to $400 for joint filers. Not every taxpayer in the state will be eligible for this rebate, but those with a tax liability are among those who are eligible. A website was created by the Virginia Department of Taxation for residents to see if they are eligible for the rebate and how much money they are eligible for.

Tax rebates are currently being sent out to eligible residents in the state, either by direct deposit or paper check, depending on how they received their tax refund earlier this year. Distribution is expected to proceed on a rolling basis over the next couple of weeks, according to the state.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) announced in a press release last week that the distribution of the tax rebate would begin on Oct. 25 to eligible taxpayers in the state. Youngkin said the rebates will help residents “keep more of their hard-earned money.”

“We’re excited to announce that tax rebates will begin to be distributed in the coming days. As Virginians continue to face inflation and high prices as a direct result of policies out of Washington, D.C., these rebates are an important step going into the holiday season to help Virginians keep more of their hard-earned money for gas, groceries and essentials,” Youngkin said.

“My administration has delivered over $5 billion in tax relief to Virginians, and we’re pleased that these rebates will provide needed relief to Virginians,” the governor said.
