Stimulus update: Direct payment worth $2,400 from Texas teacher retirement system to be sent in 21 days

Payments worth up to $2,400 for retired Texas teachers will be distributed at the end of December through the state Teacher Retirement System.

Retired teachers who are at least 70 years old will receive a one-time $2,400 stipend. Former teachers who elected to receive their annuity check via a paper check will see their benefits in the mail on Dec. 28, and those who opted for direct deposits will see the benefits in their accounts on Dec. 29.

Texas lawmakers passed Senate Bill 10 this year, which proposed raises between 2% and 6% to retired teachers’ monthly pension checks. That measure was then placed on the 2023 ballot as Proposition 9, asking voters to approve $3.3 billion from the general revenue fund for the raises. Proposition 9 passed and will affect not only teachers but all retired Texas public education employees.

Under Senate Bill 10, a one-time $7,500 stipend will be given to eligible annuitants who are 75 or older, and a one-time $2,400 stipend will be given to eligible annuitants ages 70 to 74 by January 2024.

However, multiple lawsuits have been filed against Texas’s 14 constitutional amendment propositions that were on the ballot in November, threatening the timeline for the new provisions to the Teacher Retirement System and when payments will be sent out in 2024. The lawsuits mainly target electronic voting machines used in the election, claiming the equipment is not properly certified and that machines are connected to the internet and violate the Texas Election Code.
