Stimulus update: Everything to know about Michigan sending out checks averaging $550 to families next month

Michigan will be sending out checks to roughly 700,000 households in the state for an average of $550 as part of an expanded Working Families Tax Credit next month.
The checks going out to eligible residents in Michigan will be equal to the difference between the 6% Working Families Tax Credit on the 2022 tax refunds of eligible taxpayers and the 30% that the credit is now worth under a law signed last year. The state says the combined tax credit will offer an average of a $3,150 tax refund for 700,000 families for tax year 2022.

“By quintupling the Working Families Tax Credit, we’re putting an average of $550 back in the pockets of 700,000 Michigan families ahead of schedule,” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) said in a statement in December. “This directly benefits half the children in Michigan, and moms and dads can use this extra money at tax time to pay the bills, put food on the table, and buy school supplies.”
The checks will go out beginning on Feb. 13 and will be sent out on a rolling basis over a period of five to six weeks.

The Michigan Department of Treasury will determine who is eligible for the additional tax credit and will automatically send out payments, meaning taxpayers do not need to fill out additional paperwork to receive the check.
The 30% rate for the Working Families Tax Credit will be in place for tax year 2023 and will be part of refunds issued by the state later this year to eligible taxpayers. More information about the tax credit can be found on the state’s website.
