Stimulus update: Georgia residents eligible for rebate worth up to $500

Most Georgia residents have received their 2022 tax rebates from the state, but some taxpayers who received an extension to file their 2022 taxes will soon get their rebate worth up to $500.

The rebates to eligible Georgia residents are dependent on filing status and tax liability. Single filers get as much as $250, heads of households receive as much as $375, and joint filers receive as much as $500.

The state said all payments were issued to those who filed their 2022 tax returns by the regular April 18, 2023, deadline, but it added that that those who have received a lawful extension will see their refund once their tax returns have been filed. The IRS authorized extensions for residents in parts of Georgia in February, allowing them to file by Oct. 16.

To qualify for the rebate, residents must have filed their income tax returns for 2021 and 2022, had a tax liability in 2021, and be a “Georgia resident, part-year resident, or nonresident.”

“Georgia is once again in a position to issue surplus tax refunds thanks to years of responsible, conservative budgeting and because we chose to protect both lives and livelihoods during the pandemic,” Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) said in a statement in May.

“While failed policies coming out of Washington, D.C. are pushing us closer to a recession and forcing hardworking Georgians to endure sky-high inflation, we on the state level are doing what we can to return money back where it belongs — in taxpayers’ hands,” he added.
