Stimulus update: New tax rebate worth up to $750 available for Arizona residents

A new tax rebate is now available for hundreds of thousands of Arizona families in 2023, with Gov. Katie Hobbs (D-AZ) calling it the first of its kind.

Hobbs announced the new rebate on Tuesday, months after the Arizona Families Tax Rebate was signed into law as part of the state’s fiscal 2024 budget. The governor said in a news release via AZ Family that this rebate will go to almost 750,000 families.

“As someone who at times relied on assistance to get by, I know that every penny counts,” Hobbs said in a news release. “I made a promise that when I took office, I would take every opportunity I had to make it easier for Arizonans to provide for their families and lower the cost of living. I am so pleased to be able to deliver this relief with the Arizona Families Tax Rebate.”

The rebate is worth $250 per dependent under the age of 17 and $100 per dependent over 17 who are claimed on a household’s 2021 tax returns. The maximum tax rebate is $750.

To be eligible, an Arizona resident must have filed a full-year resident personal income return for tax year 2021; claimed at least one dependent tax credit on the 2021 return; filed the 2021 return as the only taxpayer on the single, married filing separate, or head of household return or as the primary or first-listed taxpayer if married filing jointly; and had at least $1 in Arizona personal income tax liability in tax years 2021, 2020, or 2019.

Rebates will be issued using a family’s direct deposit information. If the state does not have direct deposit information, a paper check will be issued to the last known address. Deposits are expected to take place sometime in November, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
