Stimulus update: Pennsylvania residents have until Dec. 31 to file for up to $650 in property tax rebates

Eligible Pennsylvania residents have until the end of December to file an application for the state’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program.

The amount of a tax rebate a household will receive will depend on income and whether the applicant rents or owns their home. The maximum standard rebates are between $250 and $650 for homeowners and between $500 and $650 for renters.

Supplemental rebates for qualifying homeowners can boost rebates up to $975, according to the state’s Department of Revenue.

The income limit is $35,000 annually for a homeowner and $15,000 annually for renters. Half of Social Security income is excluded.

Homeowners with an income from $0 to $18,000 can receive a maximum rebate of $650, those with incomes $8,001 to $15,000 can receive a maximum rebate of $500, those with incomes $15,001 to $18,000 can receive a maximum rebate of $300, and those with incomes of $18,001 to $35,000 can receive a maximum rebate of $250.

Renters with incomes of $0 to $8,000 can receive up to $650, and those with incomes of $8,001 to $15,000 can collect a rebate of up to $500.

Since the program’s start in 1971, older and disabled adults have received more than $7.6 billion in property tax and rent relief, per the state.

To ensure that seniors in the Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Scranton communities receive significant property tax relief, each senior household with income under $30,000 will have its property tax rebate increased by an additional 50%, per the state.

Homeowners and renters have until Dec. 31 to submit an application.
