Students in Pennsylvania school district plan walkout over male using girls' bathroom

EXCLUSIVE — Students at a Pennsylvania school district intend to walk out of class next week to protest a district policy that has allowed an 18-year-old biological male to use the girls’ locker room .

The walkout in Penn-Delco School District will take place on Oct. 25, according to an announcement shared with the Washington Examiner. The planned protest comes after parents and students repeatedly complained to school district officials about the policy that allows biological men who identify as women to use the female lavatory facilities.

According to emails shared with the Washington Examiner by the parent activist group Parents Defending Education, the district superintendent, George Steinhoff, told a parent that several years ago, the district “consulted our legal counsel and clarified that its practices around school-level bathroom use were in compliance with Title IX, relevant court rulings, and anti-discrimination policy.”

“The topic can be a confusing one for parents whose personal beliefs don’t always align with non-discriminatory practices required of schools,” the superintendent said in the email.

The school district did not respond to a request for comment.

Michele Exner, a senior adviser for Parents Defending Education, told the Washington Examiner that allowing males into girls’ bathrooms is “pure lunacy” and has substantial ramifications for the safety of female students.

“It is sexist and deprives young women in these schools from having access to their own space and ultimately jeopardizes their security and safety,” she said. “At Parents Defending Education, we are proud to stand with the students and families who are objecting to this anti-girl policy. Schools should focus on teaching academic fundamentals and listening to parents’ concerns instead of catering to political activists.”
