Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) said supporting former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie‘s presidential ambitions will only help Republican front-runner Donald Trump secure the nomination.
Sununu endorsed former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley last month, denying Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) his support in the early-voting state. Sununu, who has warned that a second Trump term would come with chaos, is now pushing for a smaller field of Republican hopefuls.
“A vote for Christie is a vote for Donald Trump,” Sununu told RealClearPolitics. “There’s no question about it. Chris knows he can’t win.”
Sununu has been openly critical of Trump since the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol after endorsing his reelection campaign in 2020.
With two weeks until the New Hampshire primary, Sununu advised voters to steer clear of the long-shot candidate Christie.
“If Christie stays in the race, he helps Trump win,” Sununu said. “That’s it. He’s helping Trump. Trump wants Christie in the race. I know that’s not what [Christie’s] original strategy was, but again, that strategy has kind of come to an end.”
Having toyed with a presidential bid of his own in the past, Sununu has praised Haley as the only candidate who could defeat Trump.

Other members of Sununu’s family have also endorsed Haley, who has shown extreme appreciation for the New Hampshire governor’s support, telling WMUR, “I am honored to have the support of America’s coolest political family. The Sununus are strong leaders who have served America and New Hampshire with honor and integrity.”
Haley has seen a polling surge in The Granite State, gaining on the Republican front-runner. Trump is at 39% among likely Republican primary voters in New Hampshire while Haley holds 32%, according to a CNN and University of New Hampshire poll released Tuesday.
