Sununu went from all-in on Haley to reluctantly betting on Trump – Washington Examiner

Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) said he will support former President Donald Trump in the general election after months of spirited support for former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in the GOP primary.

Haley dropped out of the race on Wednesday and opted not to endorse Trump, but Sununu, a fierce Haley supporter, told WMUR on Thursday that he will back the former president in a general election matchup against President Joe Biden.

“I’m going to support the ticket. I’m going to support Donald Trump,” Sununu told the outlet, “but my focus is definitely going to be here in the state.”

Sununu had been sharply critical of Trump throughout the Republican primary, calling him too old and a “loser,” among other jabs. He told the outlet that he still stands by his criticisms of Trump but that Biden is worse than the former president.

“He’s old. He’s probably too old for the job,” Sununu told the outlet. “Look, I don’t take any of that back, to be sure.”

“But again, understand this is an alternative. I mean, the alternative is Biden, and I think folks are seeing a lack of management, a lack of understanding of what’s happening with immigration, a lack of fiscal responsibility,” he added.

The New Hampshire governor previously warned that if Trump were the GOP nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris would ultimately be the president via a domino effect. He said the Republican Party will not be controlled by Trump forever in remarks last month.

“Let me put it in a different way: A**holes come and go, but America is here to stay!” Sununu said at Politico’s Governors Summit in February.

Sununu is not seeking another term to the governorship in the Granite State, and the race to succeed him is expected to be one of the fiercest in the country.
