Susan Collins won’t endorse Trump after New Hampshire win

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) declined to endorse former President Donald Trump after his New Hampshire primary win, saying that she doesn’t see how she ever could at the moment.

Collins, one of the most well-known centrists in the Senate, appears to be holding out hope that former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley could clench the nomination.

When asked if she could see herself endorsing Trump if he wins the GOP nomination, Collins told the Hill, “I do not at this point.”

The Senate’s most senior Republican woman appears to be staking her hopes on Haley, even after her defeat in the New Hampshire primary, the state in which she had the most support. Though the South Carolina Republican lost by roughly 11 points, Collins expressed confidence that she could gain momentum.

“I’m glad to hear last night that Nikki Haley is determined to stay in,” Collins said. “I think the more people see of her, particularly since she appears to be the only alternative to Donald Trump right now, the more impressed they will be.”

Collins has had a frosty relationship with Trump, being one of seven Republican senators to vote to impeach him for allegedly inciting insurrection in 2021.
