The Chicks founding member Laura Lynch killed in car crash at 65

Musician Laura Lynch, one of the founding members of the band The Chicks, died Friday in a car crash at 65.

Lynch was driving east on Highway 62 in El Paso, Texas, when a driver traveling in the opposite direction crossed into Lynch’s lane in an attempt to pass the car ahead of it. As a result, Lynch was hit head-on and declared dead at the scene.

The other driver survived and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. It remains to be seen if the driver will face any charges related to the crash.

Lynch founded the band with Robin Lynn Macy, Martie Erwin, and Emily Erwin in 1989. She played the upright bass and later performed the lead vocals on their third album. She left the band in 1993 and was replaced by Natalie Maines, who remains a performing member. Macy is also no longer a part of the band, which was known as the Dixie Chicks until 2020.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Laura Lynch, a founding member of The Chicks,” the band wrote Saturday on Instagram. “We hold a special place in our hearts for the time we spent playing music, laughing and traveling together. Laura was a bright light … her infectious energy and humor gave a spark to the early days of our band. Laura had a gift for design, a love of all things Texas and was instrumental in the early success of the band. Her undeniable talents helped propel us beyond busking on street corners to stages all across Texas and the mid-West.

“Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones at this sad time,” the caption read.

Lynch is survived by her husband Mac Wells and daughter Asia.
