The pressure is working: Don’t cave on border security now

This past Friday, we noted that Senate Republican leaders have begun a coordinated attack on House Republicans designed to force the House to accept whatever deal Senate GOP negotiators strike with Senate Democrats and the White House on border security.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD), and Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) all made statements to the effect that House Republicans should accept “something” on border security now, even if it was not actually sufficient to solve the crisis.

“It makes no sense to me for us to do nothing when we might be able to make things better,” Cornyn said. And Thune echoed him, claiming that “this is a unique moment … an opportunity to get some conservative border policy.”

The problem is “some conservative border policy” will not get the job done. President Joe Biden has the tools to start solving the border crisis now. President Donald Trump solved a similar crisis in 2019 without any congressional support. Biden can too. He just needs to be pressured into doing it.

And that pressure is growing.

Also on Friday, Denver Health Chief of Government Affairs Dr. Steve Federico appeared on The Ingraham Angle, pleading for a bailout of Colorado’s hospital system that is being bankrupted by Biden’s border crisis.

“We absolutely need additional public support to help provide healthcare to our safety net hospitals such as Denver Health,” Federico said. “We’re needing to respond to this huge humanitarian crisis in our emergency rooms and our clinics. And so what we’re looking for is for policymakers to step up and fund appropriately the healthcare providers that are providing this care.”

Fox News reports that about 8,000 illegal immigrants recorded about 20,000 visits to Denver hospitals last year, contributing to the system’s $22 million deficit.

Asked for comment, Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) told Fox News: “It should be no surprise that without real border security and fixing our broken immigration system, hospitals across the country are having to treat migrants who aren’t insured.”

Polis is right. Without “real border security,” hospitals around the country are going to go bankrupt providing free healthcare to illegal immigrants.

Unless Senate Republicans bail them out first.

Blue states are really beginning to feel the pain of Biden’s border crisis. The Democrats would much rather ease that pain with bailouts than make the necessary changes to policy on the southern border. House Republicans want to use that pressure to force real reforms that will actually solve the problem.

Unfortunately, it seems that Senate Republicans are siding with the Democrats.
