The hosts of The View harshly criticized Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) over comments made shortly after House Speaker Mike Johnson was nominated for the speakership role, with co-host Joy Behar joking they were bordering on “elder abuse.”
The hosts were discussing a Q&A that Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) and House Republicans held ahead of the speakership vote that included a reporter asking Johnson if he stood by his decision to overturn the 2020 election results. The question elicited multiple boos, with Foxx saying “shut up” twice.

“Well, then, they need to find some stamina, because that’s unacceptable, and that little nasty lady in the front needs to get out of office,” said Sara Haines, one of the show’s co-hosts. “Her saying ‘shut up’ to the reporter? Out!”
Fellow co-host Joy Behar then joked that Haines was almost going too far in her criticism, saying she was “bordering on elder abuse.”
Haines went on to say that Foxx is what most “online trolls” tend to look like, adding that “they’re a grandmother. They’re on the school council. They work in their churches.”

When going to the House floor, Johnson secured enough votes to become the 56th speaker of the House on Wednesday, with the tally coming in at 220 to 209 against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). The vote brought an end to the search for a new speaker that had gone on for over three weeks.
The Louisiana Republican lawmaker was able to win the speakership on the first round of votes, unlike his predecessor, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who went 15 rounds before becoming speaker in January.
