Tiana Lowe Doescher argues Trump’s 2024 vice presidential pick will be crucial – Washington Examiner

The Washington Examiner’s Tiana Lowe Doescher said Tuesday that presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will need to be wise in who he selects as his running mate, which could help him in winning back the White House.

The topic of whom Trump will select to be his 2024 vice presidential candidate has been a growing discussion ahead of the election. Doescher, a commentary writer for the Washington Examiner, explained that like President Joe Biden, Trump is an older presidential candidate, meaning that the person he selects as his vice president will be considered by voters in this year’s election.

“Last time, Mike Pence was good because he solidified the evangelical vote for Trump,” Doescher said on Fox Business’s Cavuto: Coast to Coast. “This time around, I think outreach to suburban women will matter. You know, Elise Stefanik touted she’s very good, but what he really needs is someone who’s very good at being a whip on the Hill, that’s something Mike Pence was.”

Beyond Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Doescher also pointed to Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) as a candidate because he could do well in leading the Senate. Scott could also help Trump win over support from black voters, a voting bloc that Doescher argued the Democratic Party has taken for granted ahead of the 2024 elections.

Both Scott and Stefanik are rumored to be on Trump’s vice presidential short list, with other candidates including Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD), and ex-Democrat and 2020 presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard.

Trump seeking to win over black voters could prove difficult, as more than 90% of them voted for Biden in the 2020 presidential election. While recent polls indicate that Trump has gained double-digit support among this voting block, Biden’s support still only reaches a low of 66%.

Alternatively, winning over liberal women would be a different challenge for Trump, as 2024 will be the first presidential election since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022. The Biden administration has made abortion access a major talking point on the 2024 campaign trail, with Vice President Kamala Harris conducting a “Fight for Reproductive Rights” campaign tour since January.
