Trump believes he’ll be convicted in Jan. 6 case but still thinks he can win White House: Report

Former President Donald Trump believes there is a real likelihood he could be convicted later this spring for his actions during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Trump is reportedly preparing for the possibility of a conviction if the case does come to trial before the election, according to Axios. The case was initially scheduled for March 4, one day ahead of Super Tuesday, but the Washington Post reported the trial has disappeared from the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia’s public calendar.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan is presiding over the Jan. 6 trial and has a reputation for giving relatively longer and harsher sentences to those involved in the Capitol riot.

Even if the case is pushed back, Trump’s other legal troubles keep such a concern alive. His team is reportedly worried that even if it emerges lucky and the Jan. 6 case is delayed, Trump could still be found guilty of charges related to alleged hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels. A trial in the case is scheduled for March 25, which would be just weeks following Super Tuesday and still lies ahead of the Republican National Committee convention.

Juries in Washington, D.C., and New York City are expected to be the least kind to the former president, given the areas’ heavily left-leaning politics.

But Trump is preparing for the possibilities and planning to use the courtroom campaign site to his advantage. Given his spikes in support following indictments and court appearances and Republicans’ beliefs that the cases are targeted and politicized, he believes his performances at trial could carry him to a win in 2024. However, some advisers are reportedly concerned by the effect of a prolonged courtroom campaign on independent voters, who are expected to decide the election.

To make the most of this strategy, Trump is planning to attend court proceedings as often as possible, even when he isn’t required to show, Axios reported.

One Trump ally said, “You can’t be defensive or never talk about it because that just makes you look guilty.”

“Your only option is to play it up,” they added.
