American Eagle’s latest marketing campaign, launched July 23 with the slogan, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” sparked outrage from the left. The phrase, a nod to Sweeney’s “great genes,” drew backlash from some social media users who interpreted the ad as promoting a narrow beauty ideal. Critics argued that spotlighting a white, blonde, blue-eyed actress in a highly sexualized context carried unsettling implications and echoed outdated standards. Many others saw the ad as playful and consistent with longstanding advertising trends, like American Eagle trying to selling sexy jeans.
American Eagle later responded to critics, restating the campaign’s tagline.
“Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans,” the company wrote on Instagram.
The brand posted another photo of Sydney on Sunday, with the caption, “blue jeans for summer sundays.”
