The Washington Examiner’s Byron York reflected on President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees and how they showcase that he has never been “a conventional Republican.”
Trump’s Cabinet and Cabinet-level picks include a variety of ideologies, ranging from GOP Govs. Doug Burgum (R-ND) and Kristi Noem (R-SD) to former Democrats such as former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. In reflecting on Trump’s nominees, York argued Trump is picking people across the political spectrum because of his plan to address two major topics affecting voters.
“Well, we’ve known since Trump came down the escalator in 2015 that he’s just not a conventional Republican, and over the years, a lot of conventional Republicans — Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz back in 2016, Nikki Haley this year — a lot more conventional Republicans have opposed him,” York said on Fox News’s Fox & Friends. “And I think in this case, we really should have gotten an idea when Trump had the president of the Teamsters union speak to the Republican National Convention. Something interesting was going on, and you just went through a list of some of the ideologically diverse picks that he has made. And you have to remember the bigger reason he’s doing this is why he was elected: He was elected to fix the economy and fix the border. Almost everything else was secondary to those goals.”
York also argued that one way Trump and his administration plan to fix the economy is through addressing the nation’s energy problems, which would include allowing the energy industry to “sell and process all the oil and natural gas that it could find.” He noted how the Biden administration has attempted to stop this, whereas Trump’s team, with Burgum’s help, would set off “an economic boom.”
“And if you listen to him through the campaign, he said, ‘Drill, baby, drill,’ in every single appearance,” York said.

Trump nominated Burgum for interior secretary earlier this month, with the president-elect vowing to “turn our country around.” Burgum will also lead the newly formed National Energy Council, which will consist of agencies and departments across the government involved in energy permitting, production, generation, distribution, regulation, and transportation.
Last week, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) contended that Trump is focused on bringing “competency and reality” back to the nation with his Cabinet picks.
