Former President Donald Trump invoked Jesus when refusing to commit to backing a candidate in the House speakership race.
Speaking to reporters in New Hampshire, Trump quipped that the prospect for one candidate to get the required number of votes is so difficult that only Jesus could get the needed amount.

“That four threshold is very tough. It’s a very tough thing no matter who it is,” Trump said. “There’s only one person that can do it all the way. Do you know who that is? Jesus Christ.”
“If Jesus came down and said, ‘I want to be speaker,’ he would do it. Other than that, I haven’t seen anybody that can guarantee it,” he quipped.
Despite this, the former president maintained a positive attitude.
“Something’s going to happen. It’ll be positive. It’ll end up working well. I’m staying above it,” he said. “I have to right now.”

“But I’ve spoken to just about all the candidates, quite a few of them, and they’re terrific people,” he continued.
Since Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was ousted as speaker earlier this month, Republicans have been paralyzed in their efforts to select a new House speaker. Reps. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Jim Jordan (R-OH) were both rejected after being selected by the party, and there is no clear front-runner for the nomination, though multiple Republicans have put themselves forward.
