Trump muses about assassination attempts at town hall: ‘Only consequential presidents get shot at’ – Washington Examiner

Former President Donald Trump reflected on the second assassination attempt against him, seeing it as proof of his importance.

Trump spoke at a town hall in Flint, Michigan, with Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-AR) in some of his first comments since the second recent attempt on his life. After floating new tariffs, particularly regarding automobiles, a key industry in the Great Lakes State, Trump suggested that such a move put a target on him.

“And then you wonder why I get shot at, right? You know, only consequential presidents get shot at, when I say something like that,” Trump said.

“But what can you do? You have to do it. … You have to do it, right? You have to, we have to be brave. Otherwise, we’re not going to have a country left,” he added.

At another point, Trump was more lighthearted about the attempt on his life, while still maintaining the severity of the position he holds.

“Well, it’s been a great experience. It’s a dangerous business. However, being president, it’s a little bit dangerous,” he said with a chuckle. “It’s, you know, they think race car driving is dangerous. No, they think bull riding, that’s pretty scary, right? No, this is a dangerous business, so we have to keep it safe.”

The former president also gave a full, detailed recount of Sunday’s events.

“One of the gentlemen, one of the agents was walking a couple of holes in front and he saw a rifle,” Trump said. “AK-47, that’s serious stuff, right? You know more about that. My sons know more about this stuff, but AK-47, that’s it. That’s a bad one.”

“This was an AK-47 and he saw the barrel of the gun coming out from a bush,” Trump continued. “Can you believe it? This guy was all set, all set to do his number. And there was no talk.”

Trump went on to call for more support for the Secret Service.

“This guy, these guys do a great job,” Trump said. “They do need more people, and they’ve been complaining about that for a long time, but he did a great job.”

The Republican leader also discussed the woman who followed the shooter’s car after he ran away, helping to lead to his arrest.

“But you want to know another sort of a miracle? So the guy is now running for his life, and he’s got a car a block away or whatever,” Trump said. “And a woman … a woman, not a man, a woman. See, women are smarter than men. … Our great first lady is very happy now.”
