Trump picks Billy Long to be his IRS commissioner – Washington Examiner

President-elect Donald Trump has named former Missouri Rep. Billy Long to be his IRS commissioner, he announced in a Truth Social post on Wednesday.

“Billy brings 32 years of experience running his own businesses in Real Estate and, as one of the premier Auctioneers in the Country,” Trump wrote. “He then served 12 years in Congress, because he ‘felt it was important for his constituents to have a Representative who has signed the front of a check!’”

Long served Missouri’s 7th Congressional District from 2011 to 2023 and worked in several committees, such as the Committee on Energy and Commerce.

“Since leaving Congress, Billy has worked as a Business and Tax advisor, helping Small Businesses navigate the complexities of complying with the IRS Rules and Regulations,” the GOP leader said. “I have known Billy since 2011 – He is an extremely hard worker, and respected by all, especially by those who know him in Congress. Taxpayers and the wonderful employees of the IRS will love having Billy at the helm. He is the consummate ‘people person,’ well respected on both sides of the aisle. Congratulations Billy!”

Republicans haven’t been friendly to the IRS at times. Earlier this year, then-presidential candidate Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) suggested abolishing the agency. Some congressional Republicans have put forward proposals that would enact massive cuts to funding or the agency’s workforce.

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) has been especially hostile toward the agency, putting forward proposals to cut funding for the agency to fund Veterans Affairs home loan fee cuts or FEMA relief.
