Trump receives 25th endorsement from a senator with Cruz announcing he’ll back former rival

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) endorsed former President Donald Trump for the 2024 election, becoming the 25th senator to do so this cycle and adding to the former president’s arsenal of endorsements.

Cruz announced his endorsement on Fox News’s Hannity on Tuesday, arguing there is no path forward for any other Republican candidate after Trump’s decisive win in the Iowa caucuses and that the party should unite behind the former president for the general election.

“Congratulations to President Trump on that dominating victory, and at this point, I believe this race is over,” Cruz said. “So I am proud to endorse Donald Trump for president of the United States. I look forward to supporting him enthusiastically because I think it’s time for the Republican Party to unite, for us to come together.”

“We’ve got to beat Joe Biden. We’ve got to beat this disastrous cultural Marxist agenda in the White House. We’ve got to retake the United States Senate. We’ve got to hold the House. We’ve got to come together and win, and with the results last night, the people have spoken. It’s time to move onward to victory in November,” he added.

Cruz’s endorsement means a majority of the Senate GOP has endorsed the former president in his bid to retake the White House.

The Texas senator’s delay in endorsing the former president angered Trump, according to a report from the New York Times earlier this month. Trump reportedly ranted privately that Cruz “shouldn’t even exist.”

Cruz defeated Trump in the 2016 Iowa caucuses but lost the GOP nomination to the former president and withheld his endorsement past the Republican National Convention. The Texas senator did not endorse Trump until September 2016, less than two months before the election.

Trump has picked up several endorsements in recent days ahead of and following his victory in Iowa, which saw him beat his next closest rival, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), by nearly 30 points. Vivek Ramaswamy, who defended Trump throughout his campaign, endorsed the former president after suspending his own campaign on Monday night.
