Trump supporters gain enough signatures to force recall vote of Wisconsin GOP leader – Washington Examiner

Supporters of former President Donald Trump have gathered enough signatures in Wisconsin to force a recall vote of its Republican leader.

Republicans are attempting to remove Assembly Speaker Robin Vos over his objections to Trump, and they are expected to file the recall petition on Monday with more than 10,000 signatures. Only 6,850 signatures are needed to trigger the recall.

“With more than 10,000 signatures on our recall petition, they’ve said it loud and clear: they’re tired of the status quo and demand new representation,” Matt Snorek, who started the campaign in January, told the Associated Press.

Vos, who has served as the state speaker since 2013, dismissed the effort as a waste of time and resources. It comes after Trump lost Wisconsin to President Joe Biden in 2020 despite winning the state in 2016. Vos has rejected attempts to decertify Biden’s win and rejected calls to impeach the state’s election officials.

Biden only won the state by approximately 21,000 votes, but it has withstood multiple challenges, partial recounts, and an independent audit.

The announcement also comes after the state Supreme Court declined Gov. Tony Evers‘s (D-WI) attempt to clarify if the new legislative district maps apply to elections before November, which could affect whether signatures collected in Vos’s new district counted.

Vos said he will gather a team to “evaluate each individual signature” and evaluate the validity of the effort.

If the ballot signatures are proven valid, then the recall election could occur as early as the summer. If the recall election does occur, then it would trigger an open primary in which anyone could challenge Vos.
