Trump vows to protect and support homeschooling families in next presidential term

Former President Donald Trump has vowed to support families who homeschool if he wins the 2024 presidential election, saying he will be the “champion” of homeschooling families.

Trump noted that the United States has seen an uptick in homeschool enrollment since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, stating that homeschooling went up 30%. The former president also discussed how under his administration, families were allowed to use 529 savings accounts to spend up to $10,000 per year on K-12 education, though homeschooling families were excluded from this benefit.

“So to support the growing home school movement, in my next term, I will immediately fight to allow home school parents the same incredible benefit, $10,000 a year per child, completely tax-free to spend on costs associated with home school education,” Trump said in a newly released video.

In addition, Trump has promised to work to allow homeschooling families to partake in the benefits “available to non-homeschool students,” which Trump listed as educational clubs, afterschool activities, and educational trips.

“To every homeschool family, I will be your champion,” Trump said. “Do not vote Democrat, they are looking to destroy you, if you don’t mind my saying that.”

Trump’s promise to financially support families who homeschool comes after a homeschooling legal advocacy organization warned families to be wary of legislation supporting education funds that homeschool families can also use. James Mason, the president of the Home School Legal Defense Association, claimed that his organization does not necessarily oppose school choice programs, but that it wants homeschoolers to be ineligible for state funds, even if participation in the state-funded program is voluntary.

“State money invites scrutiny and invites regulation,” Mason explained. “When that comes, we think it will sweep in those who don’t choose the money in addition to those who take the money. So the threat is that [whether] all homeschoolers take the money or not, [they will be] subject to increased regulation, reimposing needless barriers that we fought so hard to remove over the years for no reason other than some are taking public money.”

Republican lawmakers have pushed school choice over the past few years in an attempt to woo the support of voters in elections. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), who is also running for president in 2024, revealed last month his “Empower Parents Plan,” which is intended to empower parents to take control of their child’s education.
