Former President Donald Trump asked a crowd on Monday why so many immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border have cellphones.
“Weirdest thing … they come in by the tens of thousands, sometimes by the day, and they all have cellphones. I’m saying, ‘Where do they get the cellphones?’” the former president said while speaking at a campaign event in Summerville, South Carolina.

“Everybody has a cellphone. They’re all talking on these beautiful cellphones. And they’re expensive ones too. They’re nice ones,” he added.
Trump continued his questioning while speaking to the rally audience, “Somebody who’s into that said, ‘Those are good phones,’ and then I say, ‘Who pays their bills?’”
The leading Republican presidential candidate turned to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who was also at the event.
“Do you want to check that?” Trump asked her. “I’ll give it to Marjorie. She’ll figure that one out fast.”
The former president went on to compare it to the treatment of military veterans.
“Our veterans don’t have cellphones, do they?” he asked the crowd.

In December 2022, the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project released a report about how they discovered at least 30,000 cellphones at nongovernmental migrant aid shelters and U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities and were able to track through human source information, as well as open-source intelligence, how nongovernmental organizations have been actively facilitating the border crisis around the country.
Last year, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement revealed that some immigrants are receiving cellphones with no ability to make calls or access internet but can track the immigrants via an app known as SmartLINK.
