Two in custody after elementary school students share fentanyl gummy bears

At least two people are in custody after seven children at an elementary school in Virginia consumed fentanyl-laced gummy bears.
Five children at Central Elementary School in Amherst were sent to the hospital after they “experienced a reaction to ingesting gummy bears at school,” the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office said.

Symptoms included vomiting, headache, nausea, and muscle spasms, according to a report.
Suspects Clifford Dugan and Nicole Sanders were arrested in relation to the crime.

“Law enforcement tested the gummies, and they tested negative for a foreign substance. However, when they tested the residue in the bag, the field test indicated a positive response for fentanyl,” Amherst County Public Schools Superintendent William Wells said.
“At this point, we believe the bag containing the fentanyl got contaminated either at home or en route to school as the student was being transported by their caregiver to school,” he added. “There’s no indication there’s any other fentanyl at the school.”
A student brought the fentanyl-laced gummy bears to school in a sandwich bag and shared them with six others during lunch, according to the report.

Dugan is facing myriad charges, including contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possessing a firearm while being a felon.
Sanders is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possessing a controlled substance.
