UPDATE, photos and press release by Capitol Police:

Officers with the United States Capitol Police (USCP) First Responders Unit were patrolling Capitol Grounds around 9:00 a.m., when they noticed a Subaru Outback with a large tricycle strapped to the roof. The station wagon was parked in an area reserved for Congressional staff along the 200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, and did not have the proper parking permit. They spotted what appeared to be a bow & arrow, a knife, and an empty pistol holster inside the vehicle.

USCP analysts pulled the vehicle owner’s driver’s license, which officers and the USCP Command Center used to track down the driver near the North Barricade of the U.S. Capitol. USCP agents interviewed the driver who told them that he had guns in his vehicle.

The DC Metropolitan Police Department’s firearms detection K-9 indicated the presence of ammunition and/or guns in the vehicle. USCP Crime Scene Evidence Specialists searched the Subaru and recovered a rifle, a handgun, and multiple rounds of ammunition. They also found multiple knives, axes, a halberd, a rapier sword, and a bow & arrow.

The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Nolan R. Churan of Oregon. He has not been on file with the USCP. Our Threat Assessment Section is working to learn more about what Churan was doing on Capitol Grounds. Currently, there does not appear to be a nexus to the Congress.

Churan is facing multiple charges, including Unlawful Activities, Carrying a pistol without a license, Carrying a Rifle without a license, Carrying a Dangerous Weapon – Sword, Possession of a High-Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device, Unregistered Firearm and Unregistered Ammunition.
