UPDATE: Man Involved in Smuggling Operation in Critical Condition After Exchanging Gunfire with Border Patrol in Arizona

Update per the Associated Press: A man who authorities say was involved in a smuggling operation was shot Tuesday in an exchange of gunfire with the U.S. Border Patrol and after firing at a federal helicopter near the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said.

Federal agents were attempting to apprehend the 34-year-old Arizona man near Arivaca, Arizona, when he shot at a Border Patrol helicopter and at agents, the FBI said. Agents returned fire, striking the man and wounding him, the FBI said.

An unidentified person is in critical condition after being shot by a Border Patrol Agent in Pima County, Arizona, on Tuesday.

Details about the shooting are unclear.

Fox News reported the FBI is investigating an assault on a federal officer near Arivaca, Arizona.

The individual was transported to a local medical center by helicopter.

NBC News reported:

A person was shot in an incident involving U.S. Border Patrol in Arizona on Tuesday, according to a Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson.

The individual, who has not been identified, was shot in southern Pima County near milepost 15 of West Arivaca Road at around 7:30 a.m., according to a news release from the Santa Rita Fire District. The fire department said it transported the person in critical condition.

The circumstances leading to the incident were not immediately clear. There is no information whether anyone from law enforcement was injured in the incident.

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Crews from the Santa Rita Fire District and American Medical Response provided medical care to the individual on the scene, according to the news release.

Tuesday’s Border Patrol-involved shooting comes after federal agents have fatally shot two anti-ICE agitators in Minneapolis.

Renee Good was fatally shot after she tried to run over ICE agents in Minneapolis.

Alex Pretti, an armed anti-ICE agitator, was fatally shot over the weekend after he showed up to an ICE operation and tried to impede an immigration operation.
